We’ve been in the business of video production for years, and we like to think that we’ve managed to get ourselves organised in that time.

We run a tight ship and make sure every project goes without a hitch, but we’re always on the lookout for new ways to be more efficient.

There are tonnes of apps out there which can help save you valuable time when you’re planning your next film, but we’ve rounded up just three of our favourites to get you started.

Sun Surveyor

If you’re hoping to capture a shot during the infamous Golden Hour but you’re not exactly sure when that will be, you’ll love Sun Surveyor.

They call it your ‘personal guide to the sun and moon’ and promise to help you plan the perfect shot with the perfect light, or adapt to real-time conditions as you go.

You’ll easily be able to schedule in blue hour times, moon phases, super moons, milky way centre visibility, and more.

If you’ve got nothing planned, the app will also help you get inspired by keeping you informed about any upcoming events which would make for stunning captures.

‘Sun Surveyor is essential in understanding and predicting how the sun and moon light scenery – the key to stunning photographs! I use Sun Surveyor to plan shooting locations because it takes away the risk of setting up in the wrong place’— Matt Clark

Snapwire

We’re betting that you got into the creative industries because you love making films and telling stories, not because you like sifting through piles pf paperwork.

But with every job comes the not-so-fun parts, and as a filmmaker or photographer we’re afraid you can’t ignore the legal stuff.

If you’re always running around at the last minute printing, distributing and collecting release forms then you’ll love Snapwire because it makes grabbing signatures a breeze.

Not only does it make it easy and quick to fill in the details of your actors and yourself, but you can even take a photo and attach it to the document to help keep the forms connected to the right people when working on larger productions where producers may not know who is who.

MapAPic

If you’re working on your own or as part of a small crew you’ll be doing everything yourselves, from pre-production to setting up, filming, editing and everything in between.

To save time when scouting locations, you can use MapAPic which allows you to search for the perfect places ahead of time with little fuss.

You can instantly save any location with photos and GPS location, print or email the details, get detailed times on the sunrise, sunset and golden hours, tag and organise your favourites and view all of these on a list or on the map.

To keep everyone in the loop you can sync up the details and share them with other team members on the app and get those important driving directions too.
