IGTV is the new addition to the Instagram family.

I say family because it’s not really like Instagram at all. It’s more like an extension of the Stories function which has gained popularity in the last few years.

Some are calling in a cross between TV and YouTube. Essentially it’s a platform which offers vertical, long-form videos on Instagram specifically made for watching videos on smartphones.

You can choose to follow friends, brands and influencers and like TV, there are channels you can follow to view their content. It has a feed function feed similar to YouTube which curates videos for you based on your interests and people you follow.

1. To upload videos you’ll need the IGTV app

It’s been a little confusing for some creators but yes, you’ll need to download the IGTV app to actually upload content.

It’s a very simple app and at the moment all you can really do in it is upload and browse other videos.

2. You can’t record within the app

The app itself is for browsing and uploading. Unlike the original Instagram app, you can’t record directly in the app itself.

If you’re using your phone simply record vertically using the in-camera function.

You can also use free apps such as InShot to edit together multiple clips, overlay music and add stickers.

3. Most people are uploading short clips

Although verified accounts can upload 60 minute long clips the general consensus seems to be that people are enjoying short videos.

This might change as the app develops and creators respond to audience demands.

Don’t ramble on about nothing, keep in snappy and informative to keep your viewers interested and more likely to tune in again.

4. Be consistent

Like any new platform, early adopters are more likely to reap the benefits.

Start uploading regularly and you’ll get to know what your viewers respond well to.

Stay creative and respond to requests but above all, be consistent!

5. IGTV viewers want original content

In the first few days of IGTV, we’ve seen a lot of introductory and rambling videos.

At the moment its safe to assume that your viewers are going to be people who already follow you, so there’s no need to introduce yourself.

Instead, upload videos which you can’t fit into your stories.

Maybe a 2 minute tutorial or your thoughts on a news-worthy topic?

Record with purpose and add a call to action by asking your viewers to like or comment on the video.

6. You can make a cover image

This is totally optional but a good idea if you are particular with branding your videos to match the rest of your marketing.

One easy way to do this is to create one in the Stories function of Instagram as this will ensure it is the perfect size.

Simply save it to your camera roll and use a cover image.

7. It will appear on your highlights reel

IGTV is currently appearing first on everyone’s highlight reel but this many change in the future.

Although people may watch your videos this way it’s more likely they will find it through notifications or stories.

You should be able to add a ‘swipe up’ link to your story and select which video you want to add.

At the moment this is the most effective way to promote your videos to your existing followers. Don’t forget to geotag your story so that others can find you!

8. Yes, your videos are permanent

Are you doing a happy dance?

Don’t forget: Treat the platform as you would any other area social media marketing and come up with an aim and a strategy. See what works, be flexible about changing what doesn’t work and move on.
